Inside Lexis are exercises, presented as mini-games, that allow the testing and development of specific skills. Furthermore, to encourage the dyslexic subject to test with regularity, the game has been designed with a captivating character.

The child has to keep a little monster through three different areas: feeding, cleaning and fun. The mini-games are included in this contest and only at the end of the game is it possible to unlock some special bonus, useful for the character’s needs.

Last but not least, this instrument allow teachers and parents to check the progress of the child, thanks to the data saved on the associate site.

The project includes a special pack with 8 Sifteo Cubes and the game Lexis il mostro. This kit can’t be purchased on the Sifteo’s site, but it is provided at the school who acts as an intermediary between producers and parents.

This tool is especially important for the teacher who can understand the effect of rehabilitation intervention.

On the child’s profile page, through the infographics, you can view all information about the last game session: the hour played, the data of each mini-game (time, errors and percentage of correctness) and the progress in the last ten days. In addition, in particular you can analyze the errors of the child. In fact, the teacher can develop specific reinforcement activities in order to be applied at school or through Lexis by changing the content of the mini-games.

Starting from a deep study of the argument and a strong analysis of the existing projects, the thesis explores the process of concept generation, development and project definition. Then it reports the results of testing the project on dyslexic children.

Other stakeholders are parents and teachers.

 
During the research phase, I have conducted some interviews with dyslexic children, parents and teachers and based on the results I designed four personas to understand the user’s mental model and how my project can fit into the context of their life.

It focuses on the cognitive e psychomotor difficulties deriving from dyslexia and aims at full emotional wellbeing. Furthermore, it is based on a multisensorial concept, that allows languages learning to improve through games and the use of the senses.

Using the expedient of the game the child can practice with constancy and cheerfulness and through kinesthetic methods it is possible improve the learning process.

I’m Claudia Miliziano and this is my master thesis website. Here you will find all informations about Lexis il mostro, my thesis project.

I gained my first degree in Industrial Design at Palermo University. I worked for three months at the Agrigento advertising agency Stand Up on graphic and corporate identity projects and organising events and exhibitions. I worked for three months at the Roberto Fazio Studio as interaction and graphic designer. In April 2013 I gained my second degree in the Masters programme in Visual and Multimedia Communication at the Faculty of Design and Arts, Iuav University of Venice. My specialism is interaction design and my main interests are graphic and product design, art and new technologies.

“Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition, and by poor spelling and decoding abilities.”

Dyslexia is not a desease and it is not due to brain damage or a lack of intelligence. It can manifest itself in different ways, in fact there are several types of dyslexia:

  • The acquired dyslexia occurs when due to a trauma the patient loses the ability to read.
  • The developmental dyslexia is more frequent and it occurs in children when they begin the journey of learning to read. Usually these children have difficulty recognizing letters, difficulty whit language comprehension and whit fluency of language.
According to scientific surveys 3-5% of the italian school population suffers from dyslexia, about 300,000 students.

The child is able to understand how he is progressing with the aid of appropriate audio and visual feedback, which help to understand the errors without discourage him.

The Video scenario describes the day in which the child receives Lexis il mostro and the intermediate level of the game Guarda e componi.

This game aims to enhance the visual short-term memory and working memory. The goal is to recognize the word or the picture and associate it with the letters to make the corresponding word.
 
 
Scegli e componi

The video shows the inserisci level of the game Scegli e componi.

The goal of this game is to identify the missing or superfluous letter. The aims is to improve the cognitive processes involved in visual letter recognition and sequencing skills.
 
 
Ascolta e componi

The video prototype shows the easy level of the game Ascolta e componi.
This game is based on the reinforcement of auditory memory, short-term memory and working memory. The goal is associate letters with their corresponding sounds.

To build the prototype I used the software development kit (SDK) released by Sifteo Inc.
